Just a simple Cherokee trial lawyer, Barkman has been forcing his opinions on others in print since, for reasons that passeth understanding, he was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 2002. His philosophy: "If people had wanted me to be nice, they should've voted for me."

Race, Religion & Politics

Excellent speech and one that mirrored my own thoughts on the matter, though maybe a little nicer than I would have been (which is probably why he's running for President and I'm not). I appreciated the fact that Obama refused to repudiate Pastor Wright, which is in marked contrast to the sometime Clintonian tendency to throw people (Lani Guinier, Joycelyn Elders, Les Aspin) overboard at the first sign of trouble. I was also impressed that Obama chose to directly address the fears of some white people regarding busing, affirmative action and so forth. He may very well "get" the racial issue better than any other politician in America today.

UPDATE: A good analysis of the cold, hard political realities of The Speech from over at MyDD. The RW Blogosphere is, as per usual, foamingly incoherent.

UPDATE 2: EJ Dionne mentions another "radical America-hating" black minister...

Elders should have never been on the boat to begin with. How can there be any excuse for her covering up (quite knowingly) distribution of defective condoms?

Well, first, I note that very article indicates it was POSSIBLE defects in condoms. A bit different. Also, I'd like to see a little more than one source for that. Second, she wasn't fired for defective condoms; she was fired for advocating sex ed which outraged professionally outraged Republicans. Rather than defend her, Clinton threw her under the bus. Whatever else you can say about Dubya, he is at least loyal to his subordinates (providing they are loyal to him, of course).

Oh. come on now. If this were a corporation callously selling possibly defective products, would you be so quick to excuse the corporation covering up the situation? Like Elders did?

She feared that the reputation of condoms would be negatively impacted by a recall: the exact same sort of logic used by corporate America when it covers up selling defective products (or... cough cough... possibly defective products).

I guess she didn't care if this could have resulted in unwanted "chows."

As I alluded to, this happened before she was confirmed.

Surprisingly, I require more evidence than ONE ARTICLE SOMEBODY FOUND ON THE INTERNET no matter who or what stands accused.

Not every old newspaper story is on the Net. I remember this incident when it was first revealed early in the Clinton Administration.

Realize that Bush is/was not the first one to appoint incompetant, not-ready-for-prime time hometown cronies to top Executive Branch positions. This practice hardly started in January of 2001.

Oh, that I do realize. Dubya has merely perfected it to an art form.

With Elders, the Energy Secretary who wasted millions on luxury travel (I forget her name), the Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood thing (let's nominate criminals as Attorney General!), Cisneros in mind, Bill Clinton did a lot to advance the art.

I was willing to give Clinton a chance when he was elected, to see if he would keep to his campaign promises. I forget the wording of them, but they involve having good scandal-free government and all that. Then came the Kimba Wood and Zoe Baird problem where he was already trying to put crooks in his cabinet.
