Brian Schweitzer, Governor of Montana. Sure it's a long shot, but think about this: in 1990, how many people had heard of Bill Clinton?

Speaking of mid-westerners, what ever happened to Bob Kerrey? I think he would make an excellent candidate in the current climate, if not for president then certainly for VP.
