The Bush Who Would Be King

From Wampum, why George W. Bush, formerly without sin among conservatives, now faces excommunication for apostasy by outraged pitchfork-and-torch-wielding right-wing mobs.

It all comes back to the definition of that ambiguous term, "conservative." Even most of Bush's so-called "conservative" critics are not truly conservative in the larger political and philosophical sense of the word, i.e. as it relates to the intellectual tradition of modern conservativism that traces its roots to Edmund Burke. Most of these "conservative" critics are either Christian social conservatives or economic libertarians.

When most people use the word "conservative" today, I think what they really mean is "Republican." It irritates me to no end that most Republicans believe whatever the party advocates at any given time is "conservative," no matter how bizarre or contradictory the position might be.

I used to say way back in the 80's that if Ronald Reagan called for nationalizing the means of production and a dictatorship of the proletariat, Rush Limbaugh would be on the radio the next day praising it as the very embodiment of "conservative" thought. Liberals, on the other hand, feel much less loyal to the Democratic Party and many on the internets have made a career of flagellating the Party for falling short of glory.
