Not to be too cynical, but it really doesn't matter whether it's factually true or not. The damage is done: people are dead, the military gets another black eye, and our enemies get another propaganda coup.
Sadly, you may very well be right. Still, the idea that any of our troops might be capable of this level of atrocity is stomach-churning.
