Just a simple Cherokee trial lawyer, Barkman has been forcing his opinions on others in print since, for reasons that passeth understanding, he was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 2002. His philosophy: "If people had wanted me to be nice, they should've voted for me."

Stupid White Man of the Week: Marilyn Kittleman

Douglas County (Oregon) Commissioner Marilyn Kittleman believes efforts by her constituents, including the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians, to recall her for being a racist blowhard is "political terrorism" which she goes on to compare to the 9-11 attacks. Yeah, it's a pity Indians can vote, huh, Commissioner? Maybe you should ask your pals at One Nation to help out...

Not only is she anti-First Nation, she also led a fight to not install a statue of Hebe, which was destroyed some 80-100 years ago by a horse and buggy. She calls it "atheist". She also tried to get the County Mental Health to go private, and eventually had the Museum Curator fired, even though the county paid over $100,000 to have attorneys in Portland find that the woman had done nothing wrong. This woman is a true whack job. In a few days, we will be able to fire her.

I've actually been getting a lot of hits on this issue. It's nice to know that not all the Right-wing loony politicians are from Texas.

Hi,
I live in Southern California, and while searching Google Maps in the Douglas County area, came across some videos relating to Marilyn Kittleman. Seems some people were really upset with her, and were waging a campaign to oust her as county commissioner. Curious (and with nothing better to do at the time) I viewed all the videos posted, and searched Google, figuring that there must be some detailing of her misdeeds somewhere. Surely with this much passion against her, she must have done something horrible. But I couldn't believe it. There was nothing. Even a compilation of supposedly rotten things she's said, there was nothing. What on earth is it that you have so demonized her for? I tell ya, unless you can come up with something more than just 1-sentence (if that much) name-calling, then I have to jot this down as yet another variation on BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome, as defined by psychiatrist and commentator Charles Krauthammer).

It's really simple, folks:

Step 1: Take a few long, slow, deep breaths.
Step 2: Think rationally.
Step 3: Calmly read, watch, listen to the best arguments from differing sides of the issues.
Step 4: Gradually develop a thoughtful opinion on it. You're still free to change your opinion (as thoughtful people often do) but any opinion you develop, should be based on everything you've learned to date, to the best of your abilities.
Step 5: And this is a biggie. Please listen carefully. When approached/confronted with someone who has a different opinion than you, provide/offer rational support for your opinion. That's how you convince others that your opinion is closer to the truth. Name-calling is meaningless, and not the least bit persuasive to thoughtful people. 100% of what I've seen with regard to commissioner Kittleman, is name-calling. And pretty vile at that. This outsider, who knew nothing of who she is, or what the feud was about, read and watched everything that YOU had to offer for your case, and found absolutely nothing, except that you hate her. That's ALL I learned. I did not know her politics, nor yours, so I was free of biases of my own. Looking at nothing but what YOU offered to build your public case against this woman, you are the one who comes out looking rotten.

But I now see that you are liberal. And therefore, I find it no surprise that you'd have this variation on BDS. It's what you guys and gals do. For you, it works like this:

1) Figure out if a person is conservative.
2) Demonize them. They are the root of all evil.

Simple.

And you call yourselves the compassionate ones? The open-minded ones? The intelligent ones?

Nothing could be further from the truth. And civilization cannot persist with thoughtless verbal violence. Conservatives are not demons. Believe it or not, we care about everything every bit as much as you do. We merely come to different conclusions on how to make a better society. The difference is, we can make a rational case for it. If you can make a rational case for yours, then we'd be glad to hear it. That's how civilization works.

Hey, thanks for dropping by for a little anonymous concern-trolling. There's nothing I love more than conservatives adopting the least-attractive aspects of liberals: whining about how mean everyone is. Irony is not only dead, it's corpse is buried in the desert outside Reno. And of course accusing someone of racism is a far worse sin than actually being racist. Finally, please note that the Stupid White Man of the Week Award is completely non-partisan and has been bestowed on recepients as varied as Virgin Trains, David Crosby, Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Society and Kathleen Parker.
