Just a simple Cherokee trial lawyer, Barkman has been forcing his opinions on others in print since, for reasons that passeth understanding, he was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 2002. His philosophy: "If people had wanted me to be nice, they should've voted for me."

Cherokee Election Night Blogging

Courtesy of Wampum. Chief Smith is slightly ahead. It all comes down to approximately 5,400 absentee ballots yet to be counted. There is still hope.

UPDATE: Hope fades. God save the Cherokee Nation.

I still hold out some hope....although it is a sad day to get 4 more years of Chad Smith. Some people were saying that the people in the heart of the Nation voted for Leeds and the people further away voted for Smith. I wonder what that says.

What do you think is going to happen to that Constitutional Amendment?

I think that's entirely in the hands of Judge Kennedy now. Having ratified both amendments, the Smith Administration will NEVER allow the Freedmen to vote again unless they are forced to. And the BIA is, for once, waiting for the courts to act. If Judge Kennedy does rule against CN, I continue to maintain that, even though it would be the morally and Constitutionally correct result, it will be a devastating blow to tribal sovereignty for ALL tribes, not just CN.
