Just a simple Cherokee trial lawyer, Barkman has been forcing his opinions on others in print since, for reasons that passeth understanding, he was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 2002. His philosophy: "If people had wanted me to be nice, they should've voted for me."

It's Official:

George W. Bush is the most despised President in modern American history.

You're doing a heckuva job, Dubya!

He's earned it. Even without the Iraq War, I would still consider him one of the worst presidents.

Yeah, I was giving Nixon the edge in the race for worst. president. evar, due to lining his own pockets like a small-town county commissioner and the paranoid anti-Semitism, but it's becoming a real horse-race now. And Dubya still has 8 months to go. Brrrr.

It depends on what you mean by "worst." There are probably a handful of presidents, maybe more, who I would rate worse than Nixon in terms of incompetence or ineffectiveness. But if by "worst" you mean "most corrupt" or "criminal," then I would probably rate Nixon near the top.

Incidentally, just the other day, while listening to a podcast about Jefferson, I started thinking about how I would rank-order the "best presidents ever." One of the dilemmas in doing that is, do you consider ONLY their presidencies, or their entire careers? Jefferson deserves to be near the top of the list in terms of his whole career and his many contributions in and out of office, but by some standards his presidency was a failure. Or a better example is Carter: aside from the Camp David accords, his presidency was one of the worst in American history, but his many contributions since then have probably earned him a higher standing in my opinion.

Explain. Certainly Carter was not one of the best Presidents, but I hardly think he ranks anywhere near the worst. Worse than Franklin Pierce? Warren Harding? James Buchanan?

Well, by "one of the worst," I mean probably somewhere in the bottom 5 to 10, but certainly not "THE worst." For the most part he was just an ineffective president overwhelmed by events. At the same time, I think he was also one of the most decent human beings ever to occupy the White House, and certainly the most "Christian" of the many charlatans who have come before and since.

I wouldn't even put him in the bottom 10. If ineffectuality is the measure, you can add in just about every president from Andrew Johnson to Herbert Hoover, excepting only Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt. Carter's presidency was, at worst and at best, mediocre, though I agree with your assessment that he was probably too moral to be president.

I would add Grover Cleveland as someone who stands out during that otherwise unremarkable stretch of presidents.

If by "remarkable" you mean "damn near blundered into a war with Great Britain over Venezuala" and "was the Herbert Hoover of the Panic of 1893," then yeah. On the other hand, he did successfully delay the screwing of Hawaii, so I'll give him that.
