NOW I Feel Safer...
The Deputy Press Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security is (allegedly) a pedophile who tried to prey on underage girls over the internet. Isn't this sort of illegal prediliction exactly the kind of thing that you would expect to pick up in background check for someone in a sensitive position? Can Homeland Security not do ANYTHING right?

Its so pathetic that this man was in a position of authority within our government. I do not think this would of been picked up in a pre-employement investigation. I do not blame the goverment for hiring him. This type of behavior is so prevalent in our country that this only brings home how many individuals do it and feel no remorse. Doctors, lawyers, corporate heads the list of men that take part in this type of child abuse is endless.
Sadly true. It would be nice if pedophiles all had purple skin or something; unfortunately, they tend to look like Scout leaders, preachers, businessmen, mayors, and government bureacrats.
On the other hand, for years we were told that homosexuals could not serve in the military or in a job that required top secret clearance due to (among other things) the possibility of blackmail. Imagine if Al Qaeda knew someone in Homeland Security was busily downloading kiddie-porn on his work computer?
And if he was a deputy press secretary, wouldn't he have had top secret clearance? The FBI is usually pretty damned thorough about those type of investigations; I've had a couple of friends who've been through them.
