Just a simple Cherokee trial lawyer, Barkman has been forcing his opinions on others in print since, for reasons that passeth understanding, he was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 2002. His philosophy: "If people had wanted me to be nice, they should've voted for me."

Today In History

The 327th Airborne Battle Group of the 101st Airborne Division escorts nine children to classes at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The photo above was actually taken three weeks before, and the white girl with the twisted, ugly face screaming at Elizabeth Eckford is Hazel Bryan. The story of Central High School, and Hazel Bryan's redemption, is a compelling metaphor for the history of race relations in America in general, and the South in particular.
