Just a simple Cherokee trial lawyer, Barkman has been forcing his opinions on others in print since, for reasons that passeth understanding, he was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 2002. His philosophy: "If people had wanted me to be nice, they should've voted for me."

There's almost literally no way for Bush to win this, politically. Whether Uncle Fester gets appointed or not, the White House has sold out Republicans in Congress who could really use some cover between now and November.
I don't think active-duty military personnel have any business being assigned to the NSA or CIA, any more than they do running for elective office, being appointed to judgeships, etc.
That seems to be the primary Republican objection, at least officially. I suspect there are other reasons floating just under the surface layer of scum, like fear of being flogged AGAIN for the warrantless wire-tapping fiasco and have this abrasive jackleg defending the policy in front of TV cameras.
