Republicans vs. Indian Country
I have always thought that Conservatives, by the very definition of the term, should be among the most ardent supporters of Indian Rights. After all, Indian issues include some of conservatives' prime issues, such as local control (tribal sovereignty) and religious freedom. Heck, you could even toss in gun ownership rights (see Wounded Knee). Yet, the Republic Party is paralyzed by its' love affair with racism's ugly twin, endless bleating and mewling about "reverse discrimination." "Reverse" discrimination, of course, means any program anywhere that benefits historic and ongoing victims of blatant discrimination, but which has the side effect of mildly inconveniencing some whites. So it is, that Conservatives are now attacking tribal sovereignty via the Trojan Horse of opposition to the Native Hawaiian sovereignty movement.
