Just a simple Cherokee trial lawyer, Barkman has been forcing his opinions on others in print since, for reasons that passeth understanding, he was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 2002. His philosophy: "If people had wanted me to be nice, they should've voted for me."

Becoming Human

A good article on Standing Bear, the Ponca chief who sued the US Army and established the legal precedent that Indians are human beings. And all because he wanted to honor the dying wish of his son.

Cong. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Nebraska) has campaigned to have Standing Bear memorialized on the Nebraska Dollar Coin, which would be good given that there are currently no non-whites represented on any state coins.
UPDATE: Oops. Got that wrong. Obviously, they are not state DOLLARS, they are state quarters and Nebraska's is already out. The article, which I should have read a little closer, referred to a planned redesign of the Sacagawea dollar coin.
