Just a simple Cherokee trial lawyer, Barkman has been forcing his opinions on others in print since, for reasons that passeth understanding, he was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in 2002. His philosophy: "If people had wanted me to be nice, they should've voted for me."

Experience and Double Standards

EJ Dionne has an excellent piece on why the same conservatives who embrace Sarah Palin and her paper-thin resume denounced Harriet Miers for lacking the experience to be a Supreme Court Justice. And while we're at it, what mainstream political figure gives an (albeit recorded) address to a bunch of lunatic-fringe secessionists? This is good judgment?

Attacking decorated, wounded Vietnam War hero John Kerry and mocking the Order of the Purple Heart on the floor of the Republican National Convention?

Hey, them's just politics.

Mildly suggesting that being a decorated, wounded Vietnam War hero does not automatically qualify John McCain to be President?

It's. A. Moral. Outrage! Wailing! Gnashing of teeth!

Freedom Isn't Free..

..but apparently it can be sub-contracted. From TBogg, Jason Mattera of Young (or should that be "yellow"?) America's Foundation on why freedom is worth fighting for...by someone else. Because, you know, he's busy fighting the "culture war." I guess he passes fallafel to O'Reilly or something. Pathetic.

John Cornyn Swoons!!

Heavens to Murgatroid! The sheer, vicious hatred of those awful Lefties! Thank Heavens Conservatives would NEVER engage in that sort of brutal personal attack against Our Boys In Uniform.

It's not really "perjury" and "obstruction of justice" unless Bill Clinton does it.

What IS it with Republicans and hookers, anyway? I mean, are they trying to prove to us how devoted they really are to the free market?
Also, please note for the record that I refuse to take the low road and make the cheap, obvious joke of noting that at least Bill Clinton never had to pay for it.

Conservative Hypocrisy Watch (Update)

Why 2007 is not, in fact, like 1993. From Glenn Greenwald via Atrios. Great minds think alike.

Bill Clinton calls for the resignation of all US Attorneys soon after taking office (a not unusual practice):

IT'S. A. MORAL. OUTRAGE!!!
(And it still is, as the debunked frantic conspiracy theories are recycled)

George Dubya FIRES a select handful of US Attorneys (that he himself had appointed in the first place; an act unprecedented in the last 25 years) for failing to be sufficiently partisan, then has his consigliere lie about the reasons:

Eh.

UPDATE: Everything you ever wanted to know about the hiring and firing of US Attorneys but were afraid to ask, by hilzoy.

Sam Johnson: Two-Faced Hypocrite

My Right Honorable Colleague Right of Texas approvingly notes this impassioned speech by Cong. Sam Johnson warning that "defunding" the Surge is a "slow bleed" that would result in "taking away the lifeline" of the troops "when they are in the middle of a war zone" (ignore, for the moment, the fact that the Murtha Plan so despised by Right and Johnson would do absolutely nothing of the kind).

Now, let's set the Wayback to 1995 and hear what Cong. Johnson had to say then...

P.S. Read the comments, too.

I could probably do an entire separate blog on this topic alone. In our latest installment, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, an odious little man previously known for fighting tooth-and-nail against anything even remotely resembling campaign finance reform, has now apparently learned how to stop worrying and love the filibuster. Same goes for James Inhofe, a right-wing troglodyte from Oklahoma, who now threatens to deploy the F-Bomb against any efforts to reduce global warming. Inhofe previously was known for trying to gut Indian sovereignty in order to prevent tribes from protecting the environment.

UPDATE: Senator John Warner of Virginia, whose thinking has actually left the Middle Ages, leapt the Renaissance and reached the Enlightenment, will challenge crackpot James Inhofe for the post of Ranking Member on the Environment and Public Works Committee. Good on him.

Conservative Hypocrisy Watch, Part IV

I'm not sure which is worse; a bloated, drug-addled loudmouth like Rush Limbaugh mocking the disabled, or all the mealy-mouthed Right-Wingers offering lame "yes, but..." justifications for such behavior. Republicans issuing calls for "civility" in politics is like Al Capone offering lessons on crime prevention. If there is any divine justice in the world, we will all get to enjoy the look on Rush's mush on November 7 when the GOP goes down in flames.

Conservative Hypocrisy Watch, Part III

Proving once again that irony is not only dead, but its dismembered corpse has been buried in the desert somewhere outside Las Vegas, the Right-Wing Blogosphere is SHOCKED! SHOCKED AND APPALLED! that someone would use the private sex lives of elected officials for political gain.

Conservative Hypocrisy Watch, Part II

Glenn Greenwald points out that Republicans are shocked! shocked and appalled! that elected officials would try to censor a political mini-series...unless of course the mini-series is about Ronald Reagan and the elected officials are Republicans.

From Glenn Greenwald, conservatives are opposed to inaccurate, biased mini-series, unless they make Bill Clinton look bad.
