Tom Tancredo: Racist Piece of Crap

In his ongoing campaign to discredit white people everywhere, Tancredo used (without permission) the photo of a 17 year old pregnant girl murdered for trying to testify against a brutal street gang to illustrate one of his scummy "fear the brown hordes!" television ads. Did Tancredo's drones know or care who Brenda Paz was? Doubtful. As far as they were concerned, she was just another face in the crowd. Orcinus has a typically-thoughtful piece up about Tom Tancredo, the heir to the Millard Fillmore crown of fear-mongering and thinly-veiled race baiting. Dave, however, thinks that instead of the hapless Fillmore, Tancredo is more reminiscent of Barry Goldwater, mounting an insurgent, below-the-radar campaign that resonates with a certain segment of the electorate but is missed by the elites. I have actually been surprised at how poorly Tancredo is doing, given the hide-under-the-bed fear levels the rapidly-dwindling GOP base has about the Horde of Brown People. Maybe he is positioning himself for a surprise showing in Iowa, but then again maybe it's because the other candidates don't mind exploiting this issue a little themselves and they all have way more money.

All the Lonely People

A nice review of the proposed immigration reform bill from Dos Centavos. It's obviously a kludge, slapped together to keep a coalition together sufficient to get something passed. The guest worker program is, as mentioned before, a sop to corporate Republicans, a stream of new workers to hold down upward wage pressures but who can never become citizens lest they vote Democratic. All the "border security" mouthings are supposed to placate the Know-Nothings, who may scuttle the deal anyway. And, of course, the eventually citizenship portion (Amnesty, the love that dare not speak it's name) is to round up the liberals. Will it pass? Hard to say, but the chances seem slim. The person who stands the benefit the most, George W. Bush, who would like to go out with a legislative victory, has zero credibility with either party. The key is whether enough House Republicans will vote for it to make up for the Democrats who will vote against due to the guest worker provision.

Wampum, As Usual, Makes An Excellent Point...

...where IS the White Liberal Blogosphere on the Immigration reform debate? Shouldn't they be out front denouncing Bush for abandoning his previous principaled stand in favor of the "A" word for the corporate dream of a permanent peon underclass (i.e., "gastarbeiters," or "guest workers")? Why aren't they pointing out that corporate Republicans only support "gastarbeiters" because it gives them the best of both worlds: new workers to drive down wages, but who will never be able to vote for Democrats to do anything about it? Why isn't there more denunciation of Know Nothing Republicans like Tom Tancredo for his blatantly racist pandering?

UPDATE: Political Animal, at least, is paying attention. Kind of.

Desperately Seeking Nicholas Vancampen Taylor

In case you were wondering how long it would take Nicholas Vancampen Taylor's flailing, collapsing campaign to pull out the race card, wonder no more. Obviously, young Vancampen can't just come right out and say "Boo! Mexicans are coming to steal the land we stole from the Indians! Boo! Be afraid!" so instead, he uses votes on pointless amendments flung by the ironically pro-secessionist race-baiter Tom Tancredo to make fraudulent attacks on Chet Edwards. Pathetic. At least Arlene Wohlgemuth went down in flames with a little of her dignity intact.

A Sleeping Giant?

It remains to be seen whether or not we are witnessing the beginning of a large-scale Hispanic political force in this country; for one thing, it's always easier to organize protests than build a movement. For another, Hispanic voter turnout has always been historically low and those with the greatest stake in this debate, illegal aliens, can't vote at all. Having said that, I was very impressed with the latest round of demonstrations, particularly with the leadership and keen eye for public relations shown by LULAC.
